Joyce C Helge

Joyce C. Helge, age 89 of Upper Sandusky, Ohio passed away on Tuesday, April 28, 2020 at 8:54am at the Fairhaven Community in Upper Sandusky.

Joyce was born on December 9, 1930 in Loretto, Michigan to Frank and Mary (Martinelli) Smith, both of whom are deceased.  She married Ellis C. Helge Sr. on October 3, 1953 in Caspian, Michigan and he died on January 11, 2012.

She is survived by a son John (Sarah) Helge of Manistee, Michigan, and 2 daughters Chrissy (Ron) Szydlowski, and Lynn (Roy) Helge, both of Napoleon, Ohio along with 4 grandchildren; Lindsay(Carlos) Zerzan, Emmalyn Helge (Kyle Langvardt), Chas Helge, Erin Helge, and a great-grandson Townes Zerzan.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, a daughter Mary and a son Ellis Charles “Chuck” Jr., and a brother Edwin Smith.

Joyce was a 1948 graduate of Stambaugh Michigan High School and went on to the Lutheran Hospital School of Nursing in Milwaukee, Wisconsin graduating in 1952.  She worked as a registered nurse at the Fairhaven Community and then, up to her retirement, with the Wyandot County Home Health Service.  After retirement she volunteered delivering “Meals on Wheels” with the Wyandot County Council on Aging.

She was a member of the First Presbyterian Church in Upper Sandusky, where she served at one time as an elder.  Member of the Warpole Chapter #366 OES where she was the past matron in 1986.  Member of the Usando Literary Club, and former board member of the Board of Health for Wyandot County and the United Way. 

Joyce enjoyed sewing, reading, and was an avid golfer enjoying her time at Lincoln Hills Golf Course where she knew exactly where to hit every shot.  She took great pride in regularly scoring lower than her husband and her sons!

Due to current restrictions on gatherings services will be private with burial taking place at Oak Hill Cemetery in Upper Sandusky with Rev. Ken Wessler officiating. 

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made the First Presbyterian Church, the Fairhaven Community, or Heartland Hospice of Marion, and can be sent to Lucas-Batton Funeral Home, 476 S. Sandusky Ave. Upper Sandusky, Ohio  43351.
